Susan says:I've been in private practice as a psychologist and hypnotherapist for more than 20 years, working directly with all age groups of the general public as well as through referring agencies. My specific work interests are trauma (in its many forms) and pain; it's all about the power of the mind and the wonder that is our brain. Before private practice, I worked exclusively with children and adolescents within the NSW state education system. Originally, I worked as a school teacher while doing my psych degrees externally and part-time. I went into school psychology because I wanted to help kids, and I was aware that many children's learning and social problems and poor school performance were the result of other things happening in their lives - and vice versa! Both of these jobs and the training for them have proved to be invaluable in my work as a psychologist. We are who we are because of how we reacted to what we experienced; nobody does something for no reason. Private practice gave me the opportunity to do what I do best and am passionate about: using effective therapies that empower people and make changes that turn lives around. We're not meant to be happy all the time - sometimes it's not appropriate - but you don't have to be stuck in a rut either. I have training and experience (both are on-going) in a wide range of conscious and sub-conscious psychological therapies, including (but not limited to) CBT, Hypnosis, EMDR, and Play Therapy. There's an amazing number of theories and therapies out there. My university training in psychology is the equivalent of "6+2" (6 years uni and 2 years supervision), although it took me 12 because I was working full-time and became a mum. I originally trained in hypnosis because it made no sense to me to be a psychologist and not use hypnosis - and for me that has definitely proven to be the way to go. |
